Necessity is the mother of invention. This was not a true brand new invention but was driven by her desire and love for chocolate. Through trial and error, Lorette discovered that her body reacted negatively to processed sugar. Organic was needed! Instead of spurts of energy, she fell asleep on dinner guests and was forced to retire to bed earlier than desired. I remember her saying that she was on a sugar-free diet but when a delicious slab of chocolate (food of the gods) came her way…, well.., there were exceptions.
Organic Chocolate a necessity?
While in a distant location in Africa, that urge came in waves of aggression which just had to be appeased. Late one night, while under the ‘I must have chocolate’ attack, she desperately consulted uncle Google. Sugar-free chocolate was typed into the search line with a determined thump on the ‘enter’ key. Uncle Google offered solutions of every kind. After tons of research and testing many recipes, she said…’I will never buy chocolate again’. To me, it sounded like EUREKA!
I received the ‘never buy chocolate again’ with skepticism.
We continued to live our international life until finally returning to our beloved Cape Town in mid-2017. When faced with a need to do something with her time, the ‘urge’ reminded her to make money with her passion. Do what you love and make a living! That ‘urge’ welled up at an organic earth food market one Saturday morning. In vain she sought for a no-sugar-added chocolate solution. Necessity, the mother of invention! ‘Do it yourself’, said that creative voice in her head.
Chocolate: The food of the gods
Organic, it had to be! Processed Sugar-Free, No Dairy, No Preservatives, No Stabilisers only 100% pure Organic Chocolate! More research, more investment, and Up Close Organic Chocolate were born in early 2018. Lorette, with that sparkle in her eyes, worked hard to take her ‘invention’ to the market. A decent period of testing, which was rather unscientific included watching the dilation of the eye, recording comments, and measuring willingness to pay, confirmed her hunch that she had a winner. Dark chocolate lovers said words like ‘YES, Delicious, This is Good’. One woman’s left knee visibly gave way at first bite. SOLD!
Chocolate the food of the gods (Theobroma): Around AD 300-900 the Maya People, (inhabitants of Southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras) believed that the cacao tree was a gift from the gods and a sign of fertility. These trees were worshipped. The Maya invented a drink that was made from the fruit of the cacao tree. During the reign of the Aztecs, cacao was designated the source of wisdom, potency, and an aphrodisiac. It was only in the early 1800’s that Conrad van Houten, a Dutch Chemist, made chocolate candy by mixing cacao butter with fine sugar.
No allergy: organic
Today chocolate is loved the world over. It is rare that someone is allergic to the food of the gods but here is my story. In 2008, I took my family to London for Christmas. It was a great idea at the time and we hoped for a white Christmas. Cold it was, no, no, desperately cold. Our dear friend Chris Cooper lavishly prepared a house for us. Chocolates of all kinds and flavors were found under a huge Christmas tree, on countertops, in vases and jars, in every bedroom, on beds, and in drawers. Cold London suddenly became chocolate heaven. We indulged. Food of the gods! My daughters delved in the limitless supply with great glee.
It was here that I started to show signs of an allergy in the form of a migraine headache that brought on temporary blindness. The pain was so severe that I stayed away from chocolate for 10 years. When Lorette started Up Close Organic Chocolate, I decided to taste so to market more experientially. To my surprise, I had no symptoms. Organic it must be! No added sugar, no preservatives, no GMO! I am back! HEALED
Thank you, Lorette!
